1985-86                   Return to Year-by-Year                  HOME                       Update: October 10, 2009

STATE CHAMPIONS  6A: Topeka High  5A: Liberal  4A: Atchison  3A: Wabaunsee-Alma  2A: Holcomb 1A: N Valley-Almena

COACH: Ben Meseke      WON    9  LOST   15      1st 4A Sub-State

The opening loss to Silver Lake was not encouraging news for Hayden fans. There was modest hope that the experience gained from the 1985 season would help the Wildcats this year. The offense struggled in losses to Holton, Atchison and Seaman. Then Topeka High slapped Hayden with one of the worst losses in the rivalry between the two schools. Hayden was without Custenborder and Jeff Meier for that game. Injuries pursued Steve Custenborder and eventually forced him to the bench for the season in January.

Coach Measeke challenged the team to out-hustle opponents on the defensive end. That resulted in victories over Shawnee Heights, Emporia and Ward. Hayden was dangerous this year when they could dictate the pace of the game. A very patient offense and scrappy defense kept Hayden close against league champion Seaman and was the major factor in a big upset win over Highland Park that denied the Scots a share of the league title. Coach Meseke praised the improved free throw shooting of the team. "We shot 10,000 of them over the holiday break", he explained to the the Topeka Capital Journal after the game.

Following a formula that Hayden perfected in the so-called "down" years, Hayden used the tough losses of the Centennial League to prepare for the 4A Sub-State play. The Wildcats won fairly easily over 4A opponents at the Sub-State that was hosted at the B.A.C.  Tom Jarimillo and Tim Harrison were key offensive contributors late in the season. Long time rival Atchison had little trouble defeating Hayden in the first round of the tournament in Salina and they went on to successfully defend their 4A State championship trophy.
