This team recorded the fewest wins for a Coach Meseke team during his time at Hayden. The team was lacking a go-to offensive threat.  A review of the season record shows a team that never gave up and was praised by opposing coaches for their patient offense and persistent defense.  Atchison won the 4A State this year and Coach Chic Downing was quoted by TCJ reporter Rick Dean after that game. " I have never had an easy game against Hayden", he told him after Atchison's 45-37 win in early February.  That was not only a  good compliment to the current coaches (Meseke & Taul), but to all the previous coaches and players who built the Hayden tradition.

Seaman won the Centennial League in 1985 and they put up a big score on the team both times they played. Topeka High and a few others won by large margins, but most games were within reach until the team's lack of size and offense would cause them to fade down the stretch.  Coach Meseke often praised their hard work on the court and in practice. After the OT loss to Highland Park he told TCJ reporter Alan Quakenbush, "They have played hard all year... they're going to be rewarded somewhere - either on the floor or later on in life." Current Girl's Coach Wes Meier made the winning shot against Hiawatha that gave hope that the boys might return to state tourney play for the fifth consecutive year. Holton gained revenge for an earlier loss to end Hayden's season.
