1970-71                                       Return to Year-by-Year                   HOME                                   Update:  7/29/2018

STATE CHAMPIONS  5A: Wichita SE  4A: Salina Central  3A: Ottawa  2A: Moundridge  1A: Lewis

This team might have been one of Coach Bueltel's best teams. There was a good group of seniors led by Michaelis, Clark and Zerngast and two outstanding juniors in Pat Weissbeck and Marion Carver. The team won the fifth league championship since the Centennial League was established in 1962. The regular season ended with a 17-2 record and Hayden breezed through the 3A Sub-State on their home court.

Hayden was seeded number one in the State Tournament at Emporia - this was Hayden's first time in the role of a favorite. This was also Hayden's first year in 3A competition. Unfortunately, Thomas More Prep had a good game plan for attacking Hayden, mainly, to try and foul out Pat Weissbeck. Weissbeck went out with his fifth foul early in the second half. The referees were also intent on calling technical fouls for violation of a bench rule that said a coach had to remain seated during any action on the court. Coach Bueltel received two technical fouls that added to a momentum push by Thomas More Prep. By the time Hayden could recover, the Hays team began a deliberate game and fed the ball to their big center who dominated inside without Weissbeck in the game.

So, once again, Hayden was denied a State Championship. The loss had to be one of the most bitter for Coach Bueltel. Sometimes, especially in State tournaments, referees, players and coaches are not always on the same page. Style of play and behavior differ from one region of the state to the other. Teams have to adjust fast to these variables to avoid the kind of loss Hayden suffered. The main referee was probably just calling the game he was familiar with and  Hayden was unable to adjust quickly enough to his officiating. Thomas More Prep also played an excellent game overall. Ottawa ended up as the 3A champion.
