                    Another mediocre year - but Hayden did well against old Jayhawk League foes. Coach Bueltel was hoping to gain entry to the NEKL - but they were annually snubbed by that organization.  It was during this period that  discussion of a Catholic League circulated with some Hayden and Ward people. Travel and complications of interstate competition (ROCKHURST,CHRISTIAN BROS and others) kept this idea in the rumor mill only.

                          The fast break was utilized to substitute for the team's lack of size. Early season victories were accomplished with the speed on offense and some long range bombs from Ortiz. He was known for his high arching heaves - he would have been an excellent 3 point shooter had that rule been in place. Jim Rangel was another weapon - usually off the bench - who provided some streaks of long range shooting. 

                         Tom Gannon , Sil Meier and Chello Anguiano provided decent play - but the lack of size was too much to overcome. This was the deciding factor in Hayden's loss to Atchison in the first round of the Regional tournament. Lee Flaschbarth scored 25 points for Atchison in a very hotly contested finale. Ortiz was recovering from the flu and his totals were way down for this contest or the result could easily been in Hayden's favor.
