1930-31 Return to Year-by-Year HOME Updated 5-29-2016
STATE CHAMPIONS CLASS A: Newton CLASS B: Buhler
TCHS started a more normal inter-scholastic schedule starting with the 1930-31 school year. Home games were played in a variety of places including Ripley Park, Roosevelt Jr. High and Crane Jr. High gymnasiums. Hayden coach was George Reid. Newspaper accounts of these games began to list box scores, but did not report much detail about the games. Rules of the era continued to contribute to low scoring. There was still a center jump after every made field goal.
One opponent, Christian Brothers of St. Joseph, MO, was guided by Coach Everett
Shelton. He became a Hall of Fame coach in the NCAA. He won the national
championship with Wyoming in 1943 and coached Henry Iba on an early AAU team.
TCHS participated in a KSHSAA tournament for the first time during this season.
Depression era athletic programs struggled to stay in existance. There
were a limited amount of jerseys available - sometimes the player
coming out of a game had to give his jersey to the substitute. #

Still attempting to find out scores of games with Emmett and individual scoring as noted above. Hayden yearbook (SHAMROCK) does not list the games with Emmett. The TDC & TSJ newspapers make reference to the dates and the fact that TCHS lost the games. That is the way it stands unless information becomes available at a future date.
