NCKL North Central Kansas Football League: 1928-Present           Return to Area FB                  HOME                 Update: November 12, 2011

The NCKL (North Central Kansas League) was formed in December of 1927 with charter members MANHATTAN, BELOIT, JUNCTION CITY, CLAY CENTER and CONCORDIA. MANHATTAN did not field a football team in 1930 due to a polio epidemic in that locality. New members were added in the 1930s as follows: BELLEVILLE (1931), MARYSVILLE (1932), LINCOLN (1939) and MINNEAPOLIS (1939). Several teams left for other leagues during these early years. MANHATTAN joined the EKC in 1933. CLAY CENTER and JUNCTION CITY departed in 1939 for membership in the CKL.

The 1940s saw MANKATO compete from 1940-1948. MARYSVILLE pulled out after 1942 due to WW II travel restrictions and re-joined in 1946. SMITH CENTER came on board in 1956 and the league was stable in membership until  1966. In that year, MINNEAPOLIS, LINCOLN, BELOIT, SMITH CENTER and BELLEVILLE all joined the NORTHERN KANSAS League.  The NCKL recruited ABILENE and CHAPMAN from the CKL and Independent SACRED HEART-SALINA to keep the circuit alive. WAMEGO came over from the BIG 7 in 1968. SACRED HEART-SALINA left the league in 1972 and played as an Independent. CLAY CENTER returned to the league in 1974 after a long stay in the CKL.

The group has tried to add a permanent member to allow for six league games since 1976. BELLEVILLE left the NKL in 1976 and stayed through the 1982-83 school year. Another old time NCKL team, BELOIT, left the NCAA to compete from 1987 through the school year of 1993-94. They rejoined the NCAA for the 1994 football competition. Since that time the league membership has remained : ABILENE (1966-Present) CHAPMAN (1966-Present), CLAY CENTER (1928-38 and 1974-Present), CONCORDIA (1928-Present), MARYSVILLE (1932-42 and 1946-Present) and WAMEGO (1968-Present).
