KANSAS CITY KANSAS Football League (KCKL) : 1973 - Present Return to Area FB HOME November 10,2008
The KCKL brought together teams that wanted to compete outside of the EKL or the crowded SUNFLOWER. Two members were new schools - HARMON-K.C. and SCHLAGLE-K.C. HARMON K.C. was formed from the area formerly served by closed schools ROSEDALE and ARGENTINE. SCHLAGLE-K.C. was created to serve the area to the west of HARMON-K.C. WARD-K.C. was a Catholic school that played as an INDEPENDENT. WYANDOTTE-K.C. and WASHINGTON-K.C. had previously belonged to the SUNFLOWER League. SUMNER-K.C. was an all black student high school that played an INDEPENDENT schedule.
SUMNER-K.C. was closed after the 1977-78 school year as part of court ordered desegregation. Some of the students went to various Kansas City high schools. SUMNER ACADEMY was the name of the "magnet school" that many of the past students attended the following year. They did not compete again as a football team until 1980. WARD-K.C. experienced a population decline that made the new HURON League more attractive in 1989. SUMNER ACADEMY was also much smaller than the other KCKL teams and joined WARD-K.C. in the new league. When the HURON League closed after the 2003-2004 school year, SUMNER ACADEMY came back to the KCKL.
ATCHISON asked the KSHSAA to place them in a league after competing as an INDEPENDENT for several years. The KAW VALLEY and BIG 7 lobbied against admission of the team. The KSHSAA placed ATCHISON in the KCKL starting with the 2008-09 school year.
