The 3A Class expanded the number of play-off teams to 16 for 1975. Hayden was a pre-season favorite to win the Centennial League and to gain a play-off berth. The start to the season did not seem to bode well for either of those predictions. Jerry Zieglar's 34 yd run was the only score in the Hayden victory over Topeka West and Hayden's ancient rival Seaman crushed the Wildcats on old Chuck Logan field. Doug Boldt had missed the Seaman game and his return sparked the offense in the win over Washburn Rural.

After squeaking by Highland Park, Hayden rolled over the next three opponents.  Ed Mainey passed for 160 yards and 2 TD's against Chapman. Doug Boldt took the opening kickoff  83 yards against Atchison and the defense played one of their better games. "We're small and we're not very fast," Joe Leiber said in TCJ game story by Stan Wilson, " but we're quick and we hit. I'd hate to play a team that hit as hard as we do." John Walsh, John Tetuan and Jerome Gutierrez were leaders of the defense all year long.

The game against Emporia was probably the greatest win of the the Joe Lieber era. Emporia entered the game unbeaten and ranked #2 in CLASS 4A by the TCJ.  Mark Swafford and Steve Smith were all-state players for Emporia. Smith would have his all-state season in 1976 when Emporia won the 4A State Championship. Doug Boldt had one of his best games scoring 2 TD's, one on a 48 yd pass interception. Walsh recovered a fumble that he caused with his tackle of Emporia QB Smith. That stopped a potential scoring drive late in the 4th quarter and Emporia did not get the ball back until the clock had almost run out. The win also allowed Hayden to share the Centennial League championship with Emporia.

Coach Lieber's kick-off team produced the score that allowed Hayden to break open the play-off game against Concordia. Jerry Zieglar broke a 6-6 tie with the 79 yard 2nd half kickoff. Mainey turned to the passing game after Concordia started to shut down the rush.  Hayden fell to Augusta 21-17 mainly due to an offense that ran out of gas. There were some questionable calls during Augusta's last scoring drive, but Hayden was unable to move the ball on the ground against Augusta.  "Our defense played it's regular  super game," Coach Leiber said in Stan Wilson's game report, "the offense just couldn't come up with the big play ." Augusta's Coach Poague praised the defense as the best they had played against that year.  Augusta played eventual champion Wichita Kapaun in the semi-final and only lost 14-6 - that was as close as anybody got to beating the Crusaders in the 3A playoff.

Hayden was favored to repeat as a 3A play-off contender in 1976. After beating Topeka West 20-0, they carried a #2 3A ranking into their game with Centennial nemesis Seaman. Seaman upset the Wildcats for the second year in a row. Kyle McNorton led the Vikings who also played their best defensive game of the year.

Mike Geist was the leader of this team on offense and a solid defensive player as well. Jay Toelkes and John Silovsky were the other main offensive threats on this team. Hayden's defense was called on often in many narrow victories after the Seaman game.  Key members of the defense were Geist, Mike Sabatini, Bob Stringer & Joe Beurlein.

The play-off system did not treat Hayden kindly in 1976. The final (7-2) record tied them with several other 3A teams. The won-loss percentage of Hayden's opponents were slightly lower than 5 other 3A teams with the same record. The crucial game of the year was the heart breaking loss to Emporia (eventual 4A State Champion) at Hayden Field.  Dave Geist mishandled the snap on the team's PAT kick attempt in the 2nd quarter - but then recovered to throw a pass to an open Tom Langer in the end zone.  Unfortunately, Langer slipped before he could catch the pass. Several Hayden drives stalled in the 2nd half in a defensive struggle. Emporia only had 2 first downs in the second half.  Coach Lieber thought that Hayden had the break that would turn the tide when Emporia fumbled with less than 2 minutes to play in the 4th quarter.  Mike Geist scooped up the ball and ran inside Emporia's 20 yd line. However, the referees ruled that the play had been whistled dead and returned the ball to Emporia who held on to win the game and the outright Centennial League championship. Coach was sure that the whistle came early - but cited many other chances that had been missed by the Wildcats on the wet field.

A frantic 13 point comeback in the 4th quarter allowed Hayden to beat Leavenworth in the final game of the year.  That kept them alive in the 3A playoff system until the KSHHA made the calculations that Hayden's opponents were 1.24% inferior to Wellington's opponents. Wellington made it to the semi-finals where they lost 24-7 to Wichita Kapaun.
